Configurational Isomerism

Configurational  Isomerism

The Isomers which has the same molecular and structural formula but different arrangement of atoms in space (with respect to each other) resulting from rigidity of  structure.
They are different compounds (i.e. they have the different physical and chemical properties) and they are not readily inter convert.

Types of Configurational Isomerism
a)  Geometrical Isomerism
          i. Geometrical Isomerism in Alkene
         ii. Geometrical Isomerism Ring
b)  Optical isomerism

I.  Geometrical Isomerism in Alkene
The Isomers which has the same molecular and structural formula but different arrangement of atoms in space (with respect to each other) this occurs due to the restricted rotation of C=C double bonds.
This gives rise most alkenes exist in Isomeric form.
